The name ‘Meghalaya' literally translates to ‘Abode of Clouds' and it is so apt in describing this northeastern state of India, as it is nestled at an altitude where the beautiful land appears to kiss the clouds above. The breath-taking views, beautiful waterfalls, pollution-free atmosphere and friendly tribal people, all these aspects make Meghalaya an interesting tourist destination.

Cherrapunji

Known as the ‘Wettest Place on Earth', the hill-station of Cherrapunji receives heavy rains throughout the year, but at the same time beautifies the atmosphere surrounding it. Mawlynnong 

+This secluded little village is located in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. Mawlynnong is unlike any other place in India, as it excels in its cleanliness. The travel magazine ‘Discover India' has named it the ‘Cleanest Village in India' in 2005. The most charming part here is that the visitors get to stay in cozy tree houses on their visits. There is also a beautiful waterfalls which forms a natural pool below, which is apt for swimming.

Caves

Aiming to satisfy the curious souls and adventure seekers who travel to Meghalaya,the mysterious caves of Meghalaya have become important attractions. There are both explored and unexplored caves here which are a delight to venture into, as they transport the visitors into another world. The cool dampness inside, lack of sunlight and numerous passageways bring out the adventurous spirits of the tourists.

Living Root Bridges 

The Living Root Bridges of Meghalaya can be considered as one of the best man-made wonders of the world. To help people cross rivers and streams which have high currents during monsoons, the tribes of Meghalaya build natural bridges across them, made from the sturdy roots of fig trees grown on either sides of the water bodies. These root bridges take a lot of time and effort to be made, but they are sustainable and marvels to watch indeed!

Waterfalls

As the state of Meghalaya receives rainfall throughout the year and the landscape consists mostly of hilly slopes, the presence of mesmerizing waterfalls is a common sight here. Kynrem Falls, Nohkalikai Falls, Langshiang Falls, Nohsngithiang Falls, Bishop Falls, Tyrshi Falls etc are some of the most popular falls at Meghalaya. The tourists can go waterfall-hopping here, spend a day with friends, camp, fish and so on.
